No spoilers, just smiles

February 9, 2018

Now, we don’t want to give away too many spoilers as this project isn’t yet completed but we can give you a little taster of what it is about and share some of the some experiences and fun we have had with the community carrying out various phases of the project.

The aims of the project

Funded by the One Foundation, the project aims to encourage and inspire communities to make basic household sanitation and hygiene improvements which are both affordable and attainable to the everyday person.  These changes are as simple as using a designated water container and moving it into a shady area, to a little more complex a task such as building a clay efficient stove or a new household toilet if the home does not have one.

The end of the programme will provide a public community run toilet at Madziabango trading centre, the main place of trading for the families we are working with and a new water pump in a remote area of the hills, inaccessible by vehicle.

How it works

Each month the community gets together to find out what teaching, dramas and inspiration we have for them.  This month was tree planting and communities gathered to plant trees around their toilets “good for wiping” and lemon grass around their homes to be used as a natural solution to repel mosquitos. The communities then have the next month to implement the changes.

Last month was kitchen improvement and we have seen household after household taught how to make clay efficient ovens in group workshops and then return home to construct these themselves.  Having a Changu means less trees are cut down for necessary household activities like boiling water and cooking. But not only are families saving wood and therefore money, they also save huge amounts of time not having to collect wood and everything boils and cooks on a changu at speed. Hence the name Changu Changu Moto “fast fast fire”.

We have laughed together, dug toilet pits together, installed malda pumps together and made life lasting sanitation and hygiene improvements together with still more to come…
