If You’re Disillusioned With the World - It’s Time to See Some Real Grassroots Impact: Here’s What 2 Weeks Volunteering in Malawi With Fisherman’s Rest Looks Like!

Shocker, the world can't make its mind up about volunteering. We've heard the good, seen the bad, but ultimately stood by loving what volunteering can do in people's lives.

Short term volunteer group in Malawi

We are set up to impact our volunteers as much as any impact they might have through their work with us… fancy that. I bet you aren't surprised. We never do ANYTHING by the book. And our volunteering is about how we can help you out - that's a little unorthodox, right?

Yep.

We are a charity that does "too much", "spreads itself too thin", "runs projects too cheap", and "punches above its weight" (feedback we've heard time and time again).

Well guess what, we have always been in Malawi to give more than we have, to serve beyond expectation and to love people from the very depth of our beings.

No matter the challenges we face.

That's what our team is about. We are happy to buck trends and advocate for what people need and deserve from charities and NGOs.

We won't tick boxes or jump on trends.

So when you volunteer with us - you will not change the world, "change Africa" or "help poor people".

You are here to understand the world better and enrich yourself to hopefully become a better person.

To learn what it is to be happy with less. To find joy in waking up, praising God for your day, and living in the moment.

We promise you we will love and support you through your stay like nothing else you've ever experienced.

And we'll send you home with memories for life, friends you'll never forget, and a verve for life that changes your perspective forever.

Volunteering in Malawi - you are part of a bigger picture.

But do you still want to make a difference? Yes, of course.

We know you do - and you will.

Short-term volunteers bring fun, energy, and inspiration to us all. You bring kindness and love. You bring an exchange and an awareness of different cultures.

You also support our sustainable and continued project work. There is nothing you do that we don't carry on when you go, and that's when short-term volunteering is beautiful and beneficial.

This summer, we welcomed Trinity School to Malawi, working with Hope4Malawi schools and FR community projects.

They've shared a walk-through in pictures of their time in Malawi.

Here is what a two-week volunteering trip to Malawi looks like:

(Yes, families, friends, couples and groups all dive into experiencing Malawi along these lines…)

Day 1:

Land in Malawi, get collected by Fisherman's Rest

Day 2 - 6:

Dive straight into projects and learn about each project from the team you'll be working with before heading out into schools and communities.

  • Read with students in libraries :) See how much you can learn about the students you are working with.

  • Make a Changu Changu Moto (an efficient wood-fired oven) with a family and chat about life, daily routines and the challenge of finding firewood.

  • Participate in a borehole repair or survey and understand the complexity of water provision in Malawi. Meet community borehole committee members and ask questions. Learn how people keep themselves healthy through the support of Madzi and basic water provision.

  • Dive feet-first into the vibrant life of the local community centre, play games, learn new songs and a bit of Chichewa, watch an outdoor cinema, have a dance off… You never really know what you might end up being roped into. What we can promise is a lot of fun.

  • Plus, serving phala, taking part in BRAVE sessions, lesson teaching (skills-based), planting trees, and visiting prisons. And much more…

Day 7 & 8:

The weekend off - experience a safari, hike a mountain, visit Blantyre city or discover the source of Malawi's main exports at the picturesque tea & coffee estates. Visit a local church with the FR team.

Day 9-11:

Back to projects!

Day 12-13:

Two nights to experience a little more of Malawi by heading to Lake Malawi.

Day 14:

Head home, full of new experiences and probably feeling like a totally different person to the human who first set foot on the dusty, hot tarmac of the airport.

Would you dare to join us? Or maybe you've already been and are itching to be back!

Meet Some of the Team in Malawi who will peel back layers of Malawi with you.

Impact of supporting projects in Malawi

Volunteering in Malawi with us is all about the experience and everything  we have to give and share with each other. It's life-changing and - we hope - one of the best things you’ll have ever done.

We could fill another few pages with the impacts of the projects. Here is a 2023 infographic of projects. To read our full 2023 impact report, click here.
